Josiah Willard Gibbs was the first person to be awarded a Ph.D. in science from an American university (Yale, 1863) and held the chair of mathematical physics at Yale. He developed much of the theoretical foundation that led to the development of chemical thermodynamics. Look at that beauty. ;)
